2016 Harvest & Heritage Days Soup ‘R Chili Taste-off Winners Announced!
The Harvest & Heritage Days 11th annual Taste-off was held this past weekend. This year’s taste off was Soup ‘R Chili and a huge success.
This year’s contestants in the soup category were: Elite Martial Arts Istitute – Knockout Cheeseburger; The Gravity Inn – Butternut Squash and Seafood Bisque; MB’s Shear Expressions – Pumpkin Pie; Twisted Rail Tavern – Crab Bisque and VFW Post 531 – Pop’s Chowda. In the chili category we had: Hose Co. #1 – The Big Burn; Twisted Rail Tavern – Vegetarian and VFW Post 531 – Combat.
The three distinguished judges this year were Jon Fritz, Wendell Kay and Sandra Grandinetti. Their decision for first place winner in the Best Presentation to the Judges category was Elite Martial Arts institute, who served their soup in a beautiful fall floral display.
When it came to tasting, the judges had a very difficult task at hand. Ultimately, the first place for Judges Choice in chili went to Hose Co. #1 and in the soup category, equally as difficult, the judge’s vote for first place went to VFW Post 531.
The public had from noon until 3:00 p.m. to purchase samples of all the soup and chili that were offered and vote for their favorite, as well as their favorite booth. When the votes were tallied, the people’s first place choice for Best Decorated Booth went to MB’s Shear Expressions.
It was evident when the votes were counted that the public had as hard a time as the judges selecting the best soup and chili. The final tally showed that the People’s Choice first place award for best chili went to VFW Post 531, and in the soup category, the people chose Twisted Rail Tavern.
“All the contestants were wonderful and everyone had a really good time, win or lose,” said GHP executive director Gail Tucker. “We hope to see them all back again next year, and hope also to welcome some new contestants.”
This year’s Harvest & Heritage Days was sponsored by Wayne Bank with support from Wayne County Tourism. The Soup ‘R Chili Taste-off is co-sponsored by Rent-E-Vent by Rent-E-Quip.
